Key Takeaways

  • USD/CAD has fallen for a fourth session toward 1.4000 as stretched US-dollar positions unwind and short-term rate differentials narrow.
  • The Loonie’s strength is also driving EUR/CAD toward 1.5755, while European political and fiscal uncertainty keeps the euro under pressure.
  • The failure of the ECB’s modest rate advantage to support EUR/CAD shows that expected policy paths and relative growth risks are outweighing current policy settings.
  • Next week’s Bank of Canada decision will test both moves, with a hawkish outcome opening the door to further CAD gains and a cautious hold risking a reversal.

Dollar retreat pushes USD/CAD toward 1.40

USD/CAD is falling for a fourth consecutive session, retreating from its mid-October highs above 1.4280 toward 1.4041. Alberta’s weekend referendum removed one source of domestic political risk after voters rejected a separation vote, but the move extends well beyond Canada. The larger driver is a broad unwind of stretched US-dollar positions, reinforced by a narrowing in short-term rate differentials ahead of next week’s Bank of Canada meeting.

Higher oil prices are helping at the edges, but this is not primarily a commodity move. The usual relationship between crude and the loonie has been unreliable throughout 2026 as rate differentials and trade uncertainty carried more weight. Today’s price action follows the same pattern. CAD is benefiting from the broader dollar retreat and a shift in fixed-income pricing, with oil providing support rather than setting the direction.

Relative rates remain the main transmission channel. Canadian headline inflation rose to 3.1%, while Governor Tiff Macklem’s firmer tone has kept the October decision open and pulled the US-Canada two-year spread narrower. At the same time, lower US yields are eroding the rate advantage that drove USD/CAD toward 1.43 earlier this month. The current move can continue while that spread compresses, even without a convincing improvement in Canada’s underlying growth outlook.

USD/CAD is now approaching the 1.40 area, which also sits near the 50-day moving average. The speed of the decline makes chasing the move increasingly risky. Next week’s Bank of Canada decision will determine whether the repricing has gone far enough: a hawkish outcome could extend the decline, while a cautious hold or renewed widening in rate spreads would quickly return 1.41 to focus.

CAD strength drives EUR/CAD lower

Section written by: Kevin Ford

EUR/CAD has broken sharply lower toward 1.5755 as broad Canadian-dollar strength collides with renewed pressure on the euro. USD/CAD has retreated from its recent peak at 1.4299, while European political uncertainty and energy exposure continue to limit recoveries in the single currency. The result is a EUR/CAD absorbing both sides of that move. Investors are looking beyond the ECB’s modest nominal rate advantage and focusing instead on the relative growth, risk and policy outlook.

That explains why the cross has fallen even as Canadian inflation softens and both central banks approach their late-October meetings cautiously. The ECB’s 2.50% deposit rate remains above the Bank of Canada’s 2.25% policy rate, but current settings are no longer providing a reliable signal for the cross. Expected policy paths, yield-curve dynamics and relative growth risks are carrying more weight. The Loonie does not need a strong Canadian outlook to outperform if investors believe Europe’s outlook is deteriorating more quickly.

The break below 1.59 has brought the March support area near 1.5650 firmly into view. The speed of the decline leaves EUR/CAD vulnerable to a short-covering rebound, but any recovery toward 1.5900 is likely to meet renewed selling unless incoming data or central-bank guidance changes the relative outlook.

Euro weaker as French tensions rise

Section written by: Steven Dooley

The euro was under pressure on Monday as renewed political unrest in France added to existing concerns about the country’s fiscal outlook.

Ongoing protests across France pushed French government bonds yields higher and added to worries around the government’s ability to deal with already-elevated budget pressures. French fiscal concerns have been a major drag on the euro in recent weeks, with rising French bond yields and widening spreads versus Germany weighing on sentiment.

EUR/USD fell as much as 0.5% during Asian trade and moved back towards 18-month lows before recovering some of its losses overnight.

The euro’s broader weakness also pushed AUD/EUR towards three-year highs, creating increasingly attractive levels for Australian businesses with upcoming euro payments.
