The rise of Swift 

The Swift messaging network was established in 1973. Acting as a central system that connects banks worldwide, Swift facilitates secure transactions by assigning unique codes to ensure financial institutions (FIs) are searchable and verifiable. 

Before Swift, a lack of cooperation among banks meant there was no standard format for account verification. This resulted in a costly and time-consuming process for dealing with new recipients. 

Soon after Swift replaced its predecessor Telex, more banks adopted the system due to its benefits in error reduction and efficiency. In the subsequent decades, Swift refined its common messaging standard and helped develop ISO 20022, now a hallmark of advanced payments platforms worldwide.

Swift messaging has now expanded to include foreign exchange confirmations, balance reports, debit or credit entry confirmations, and more. These use cases help explain Swift’s popularity within the payments ecosystem; today, the messaging network serves over 11,500 members across 220 countries and territories, processing more than 53 million messages per day. 

What are Swift payments, and how do they work?

A Swift payment is a standard and secure way of sending an international wire transfer. Swift is not a bank, and it doesn’t actually move money across borders. Rather, Swift is a messaging network that allows financial institutions to communicate with each other.

A Swift payment process usually looks like this:

  • The sender initiates a payment through their bank or FI by providing the recipient’s details, which usually includes their name, address, account number or IBAN, and their bank’s SWIFT/BIC code.
  • The sender’s bank generates a standardized Swift message and sends it securely through the Swift network to the recipient’s bank. This message includes the payment amount, currency, and recipient’s details. 
  • If the two banks do not have a direct relationship, the message might pass through one or more correspondent banks.
  • The recipient’s FI receives the message, checks it, converts the currency, and credits the amount to their account, completing the transfer.

Since multiple FIs or banks might be involved in each Swift payment, transfers can take up to several business days (though most clear within one hour) and cost up to $50 in fees. 

How fast are Swift cross-border payments in 2026?

Swift cross-border payments have become significantly faster, with nearly 90% of transfers arriving at their destination FI within one hour after being sent. 

While messages between banks move almost in real time, frictions at the final stage of the payment journey, differing time zones, and local compliance checks can still lead to the payment appearing in the recipient’s account in one to five business days.

Despite its reputation for reliability, Swift has drawn criticism for this long processing time. That’s why, in recent years, Swift has released a suite of new products and updates to match the expectations of both the business payments community and individual merchants.

Faster payments: How does Swift compare to real-time payments?

Amid the development of real-time payments (RTP), long wait times for clearance and settlement quickly became a thing of the past. So how has Swift reacted? 

Swift Global Payments Innovation (GPI) was launched in 2017, paving the way for high-speed cross-border payments. Nearly 60% of Swift GPI payments are credited to end beneficiaries within 30 minutes and almost 100% within 24 hours.

Swift in the digital economy

What are CBDCs?

As cash usage dwindles and digital transactions become the norm, central banks are stepping up to deliver their own virtual currencies. CBDCs are akin to cryptocurrencies in that they rely on the principle of tokenization, a way to convert assets into digital units. Unlike cryptocurrencies, however, CBDCs are regulated and centralized. 

Nations of all sizes are drawn to CBDCs because they provide easy access to funds for un- and underbanked populations, boost transparency in money flows, and have the potential to decrease transaction costs. According to data from the Atlantic Council, over 130 countries are either researching, developing, or presently launching CBDCs. 

When it comes to cross-border trade with different CBDCs, though, ensuring seamless trade is easier said than done. That’s where SWIFT enters the picture.

Overcoming the problem of “digital islands”

Even if countries successfully launch their own CBDC, there are lingering challenges associated with each currency’s own technology and messaging standards. Absent interoperability, the result is an ecosystem of digital islands, which Swift experts describe as “disjointed systems that can’t interact with one another.”

To remedy this issue, Swift tested a tool to integrate CBDCs into existing financial infrastructure. In a test, Swift has enabled CBDC-to-CBDC transactions using a combination of distributed ledger technology and its global messaging network. 

What is the difference between Swift and blockchain payment rails?

Swift is a secure messaging network used by FIs to communicate payment instructions, while blockchain payment rails are decentralized, peer-to-peer ledgers that combine both messaging and the actual transfer of funds. 

While Swift transmits instructions, money moves via correspondent banks. This means, some payments might arrive in more than a few minutes and can cost up to $50. Blockchains, on the other hand, transfer the digital asset or currency (stablecoins) instantly, over a ledger, with minimal cost.
